Asda gives community groups soup, a roll, tea and coffee for £1

As part of its new “winter warmer” programs, Asda is giving over 60s some soup, a roll, and unlimited tea and coffees for £1 to help community organizations coping with the cost of living problem.

The deal is available throughout November and December at any of the supermarket’s 205 cafés, it was revealed today.

The existing “Kids eat for £1” promotion, which has resulted in 557,000 meals provided since its start in late June, will coexist with this new campaign.

As elderly consumers continue to be disproportionately impacted by rising living expenses, Asda has increased its assistance for them.

According to the supermarket’s most recent Income Tracker, people aged 65 to 74 saw a £163 decrease in their disposable income in August compared to the same month last year, as increasing inflation continues to outpace growth in their pension and savings.

Although the Government has frozen the energy price ceiling, Age UK estimates that 2.8 million older families will still be living in fuel poverty this winter1.

The charity tweeted that despite the Government freezing the energy price ceiling, 2.8 million older families will still be suffering in fuel poverty this winter.

“We know that this winter is going to be tremendously challenging for thousands of elderly as they worry about how to remain warm in the face of increased living expenses and a limited income,” said Mohsin Issa, a co-owner of Asda.

‘Through our Kids Eat for £1 program in our cafes, we have already been able to provide over half a million meals, and we’re hopeful that our new offer of soup and hot drinks for over 60s will have an equally significant effect on those who need it most.

Meanwhile, the Asda charity’s cost of living grant scheme The Asda Foundation will assist neighborhood groups who are acting as a lifeline for their communities in these trying times.

In addition to offering targeted assistance to seniors, Asda’s charity, the Asda Foundation, is giving community organizations £500,000 in funds to help them cope with the present economic climate’s growing running expenses or increased demand for their essential services.

Individual grants of up to £2,000 are available, and priority will be given to organizations and charities that require financial assistance to cover rising energy costs or who want to use their facilities to establish “warm banks”—locations where people can stay warm this winter if they are unable to heat their homes constantly.

The supermarket is also promoting a “Community Cuppa” campaign at its cafes by giving community organizations a place to meet that would otherwise be difficult owing to increased electricity prices.

On weekdays from 2pm to 6pm in November and December, there will be spaces available. All community group visitors will enjoy unlimited free tea or coffee.
