As violence rises, man is samurai sword-attacked at Manhattan subway station

After using the sword to strike a guy at a subway station in New York City on Thursday morning, a samurai sword-wielding attacker wearing a ninja outfit is now at large.

Around 9:30 in the morning, police were called in response to a 911 call about a guy carrying a knife on a northbound train. They arrived at the Chambers Street station in Lower Manhattan.

They discovered a man who had been wounded in the forehead. He admitted to police that the suspect hit him with the sword’s handle. According to the authorities, his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

The suspect was observed running from the metro station, therefore more police officers have been requested to help.

According to the police, the suspect is wearing a black baseball cap with the Marvel emblem on the front and a ninja costume with rainbow-colored patterns on the sleeves.

According to the authorities, the samurai sword has a pearl handle.

The motive for the assault and if the two guys knew one another are unknown.

The incident is the most recent in a succession of assaults on innocent metro riders, with eight lives already lost this year.

Despite this, NYC Mayor Eric Adams said earlier this week that despite a 31% increase year over year, there was just a “perception” that crime was “out of control.”

Six killings occurred on the metro last year.

At least 12 people have been forced into the rails, and dozens more have been hurt in spontaneous assaults that have included stabbings and beatings.

Adams asserted that the crime rate was acceptable and said that there are typically six offenses committed on the subways each day.

Although the mayor acknowledged that there are “too many guns” on New York’s streets, he praised the police for their work in seizing thousands of weapons.

The average number of offenses each day is six, so it’s not out of control, Adams said, “but we have to be honest about it.”

Alvin Bragg, the district attorney, earlier promised to create a specialized task team to combat subway crime. The effects of them are uncertain, however.

Despite a sharp decline in attendance, recent data reveals that subway killings are at their highest level in 25 years. There were never more than five homicides per year on New York City subway trains between 1997 and 2020. With two and a half months remaining in the year, that number increased to six in 2020, eight in 2021, and it is already at eight.

Despite a 42 percent increase in felony crime, subway usage has practically halved.

The number of murders in the city has decreased by 14.8% this year, from 400 to 341 so far in 2022.

The city’s overall crime rate is up 31.1 percent, and the percentage of felony assaults and robberies is still quite high.

Adams campaigned on a platform of creating a specialized train task force to combat underground crime.

The organization hasn’t yet had much of an impact on the growing crime problem.

Adams also unveiled his “subway safety plan” in January, which included adding more than 1,000 more police officers to the city’s subway system each day.

Crime in the city’s subterranean transit tunnels is still more than 40% higher than it was during the same time period in 2021 after 10 and a half months of the effort.

This story is still developing.
