As she considers her dispute with the late artist, Miley Cyrus dedicates a song to Sinead O’Connor.

The Irish musician wrote an open letter to Cyrus following her statement that her music video for the popular song Wrecking Ball was influenced by O’Connor’s Nothing Compares 2 U video. In the letter, O’Connor expressed concern about the implications of nudity in the entertainment industry, suggesting that it can make individuals vulnerable to exploitation.

Cyrus didn’t respond well to O’Connor’s criticism and reacted by sharing O’Connor’s tweets about her search for a mental health treatment facility in Ireland.

O’Connor later demanded an apology from Cyrus for seemingly making light of her struggles with mental health.

Now, a decade later, Cyrus reflected on the incident during her one-hour television special titled Endless Summer Vacation: Continued (Backyard Sessions), which aired on ABC. Cyrus revealed that she had faced challenges with getting her song Wrecking Ball recognized initially, as some producers didn’t see its potential. She recounted receiving an open letter from O’Connor, expressing that she was only 20 years old at the time and couldn’t fully comprehend the complexities of mental illness. She noted that she saw O’Connor’s letter as a criticism of her idea and a questioning of her autonomy.

Cyrus acknowledged that childhood traumas can resurface in unexpected ways and discussed feeling judged for her choices. She highlighted her exhaustion from such scrutiny and emphasized the importance of making her own decisions. Cyrus expressed her gratitude towards O’Connor and dedicated her song “Wonder Woman” from her recent album Endless Summer Vacation as a tribute to O’Connor, who passed away at the age of 56 in July.
