Anthony Albanese proposes a new plaza for Sydney as a memorial to Queen Elizabeth II after the monarch’s death

A building in Sydney’s central business district will be removed, and Queen Elizabeth II Place, a new open plaza, will be built in its place.

On Wednesday morning, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet revealed the heartfelt tribute to the late Queen.

The area where the new plaza will be located was made possible by razing an unneeded portion of the old Registrar-General building on Prince Albert Drive. It will be located on Macquarie Street, next to Hyde Park Barracks.

The PM said that renaming the location in her honor was a worthy and respectable tribute.

‘The building behind us will be knocked over so that there’s an appropriate thoroughfare from the CBD right through to the parks and gardens that makes Sydney such a magnificent Harbour City.

‘This is a great global city and we need to make the most of it. This plan will do that, but it is also a plan to commemorate the life of Queen Elizabeth II.’

Premier Perrottet added: ‘This is a great historical precinct that we’ve worked hard to revitalise.

‘By knocking down this building, we will have this great plaza opened up for the people of NSW to enjoy, to appreciate, but most importantly to remember the service and dedication of Queen Elizabeth to the great people of NSW.’
