Another strong earthquake hit Turkey Saturday morning

Central Turkey was hit by a 5.2 magnitude earthquake on Saturday, only two weeks after a catastrophic 7.8 magnitude quake hit the region. The recent earthquake struck near the cities of Aksaray and Emirgazi, which are already dealing with the aftermath of the earlier earthquake that left nearly two million people without shelter.

The Turkish and Syrian authorities have been working to provide shelter using tents, container homes, and other facilities, but many are still awaiting assistance.

Alswed, a 25-year-old nursing student, was among 60 Syrians staying at a makeshift roadside settlement near Antakya, who erected shelters using plastic sheeting, blankets, bricks, and chunks of concrete from damaged buildings.

Despite Turkish officials’ efforts to set up 335,000 tents in the quake zone and establish container home settlements at 130 locations, many people are still waiting for help.

The death toll from the earlier quake and its aftershocks across both countries has risen to 50,000, but it’s not known if anyone died in the latest earthquake.
