Angela Rayner condemns Tory loyalists of voting to ‘save their own skin’

148 MPs, or more than two-fifths of the parliamentary party, called on him to resign last night, with 211 politicians supporting him.

Mr. Johnson is attempting to divert attention away from his party’s internal strife by focusing on his economic proposals today.

However, on one of the formal days when it is transferred by the Government to one of the opposition parties, Labour has control of the parliamentary order paper.

It comes after Labour deputy leader Angela Rayner accused the MPs who supported Mr Johnson last night of keeping a ‘mortally wounded’ leader in place to secure their own positions.

‘At the end of the day the British public can see that some of those Conservative MPs voted against not lying to the British public, they voted against their interests and to save the skin of Boris Johnson, to save their own skin because they know that they’re tanking in the polls at the moment,’ she said.

‘The public have the power to remove Boris Johnson. He may think that he’s bought himself a bit of time, but people never forget that they didn’t get to say goodbye to their loved ones. The British public do not like liars, cheats and people that break the law.

‘And I think that he is going to get absolutely hammered if he tries to have another general election on that basis.’

Labour will call a vote on a motion asking MPs to ‘recognises the importance of the Ministerial Code for maintaining high standards in public life’, after the PM was accused of trying to alter it to avoid needing to resign.

The vote is non-binding on the government and is unlikely to attract much Tory support even from rebels. But it is a symbolic move as opposition parties try to keep the pressure on the Government.
