Analysis of the departures of 16 first-team players from Cardiff RFC

Cardiff Rugby supporters were left reeling wth the news that 16 first-team players would be leaving the Arms Park as part of the cost-cutting measures imposed on Welsh rugby in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The loss of the players is seen as a devastating blow for the club, which will struggle to field a competitive team in the coming season.

Rhys Priestland is one of the players leaving, and although he is a Wales international, he has made it clear that he will retire unless he receives an offer he cannot refuse.

Jason Harries has announced his retirement, while Harri Millard, a member of the Grand Slam-winning Wales U20s squad of 2016, has departed after seven seasons.

Rey Lee-Lo has also left the club after eight seasons, while Willis Halaholo, who formed one of Welsh rugby’s great centre pairings with Lee-Lo, is currently sidelined by injury.

Max Llewellyn is heading to Gloucester, and Jarrod Evans is heading to Harlequins.

Lloyd Williams has left after 261 games, while Brad Thyer has made 99 appearances for the capital city club.

Kristian Dacey has been linked with Merthyr, but his future remains uncertain.

Dmitri Arhip has left after 71 outings, and 21-year-old Joe Peard has been unable to force his way into the side.

James Ratti is also leaving the club, and there are rumours that he might return to the Ospreys.

Josh Navidi has retired as a player after a Cardiff career stretching back to 2009-10.

Despite the losses, Cardiff will still have a talented squad with a pack boasting Corey Domachowski, Liam Belcher, Keiron Assiratti, Seb Davies, Lopeti Timani, Josh Turnbull, Thomas Young, and Taulupe Faletau. Meanwhile, Tomos Williams, Mason Grady, Josh Adams, Owen Lane, and Liam Williams will still be part of the backline.

However, the departures mean that the club will need to acquire new players in key positions to replace those leaving, which will be a significant challenge.

The financial problems facing Welsh rugby will also make it difficult for Cardiff to compete effectively in the future.
