Alliance Francaise French Film Festival attracts culturally curious crowd at launch event

The Alliance Francaise French Film Festival’s opening night was a success, with a large turnout of guests who were treated to the Australian premiere of Nicolas Bedos’ Cannes 2022 official selection, Masquerade.
This festival was launched in Australia by the French culture and language institution Alliance Francaise in 1989 and has since become the largest festival outside France dedicated to contemporary French films. The 34th edition will be screened in multiple locations across Australia, with the Perth season running until April 5.

Artistic Director Karine Mauris, who is also the Cultural Attachee to the French Embassy in Australia, said that this year’s festival had the most dynamic program to date. The festival offers a variety of films, from the hilarity of a meta-zombie comedy to suspenseful thrillers and historical dramas. There are also family-friendly flicks and films showcasing love in all its forms.

Festival ambassador Guillaume Brahimi, owner of Bistro Guillaume at Crown Perth, is looking forward to watching Sugar and Stars, a true story about a young man’s journey from a difficult upbringing to becoming a famed pastry chef, and Umami, starring Gerard Depardieu on a quest for exceptional noodles. Brahimi reminisces about his early days in Australia when he couldn’t speak English, and he would watch Cyrano de Bergerac repeatedly to make him smile. He believes that cinema offers escapism and magic.

The 2023 edition of the Alliance Francaise French Film Festival will be held until April 5 at various locations, including Luna Leederville, Luna on SX, Windsor Cinema, Palace Raine Square, and Camelot Outdoor Cinema. For information and tickets visit affrenchfilmfestival.org.
