Alicia Silverstone, 46, reprises her role from 1995’s “Clueless” in a 2023 Super Bowl commercial for Rakuten. In addition to recreating her legendary character, Silverstone also dons the film’s iconic yellow tartan costume.
In a YouTube teaser clip broadcast yesterday by the money-saving website, high school kids are discussing when Silverstone enters the room holding multiple shopping bags and wearing the yellow jacket and skirt combination.
Students murmur in disbelief as the actress from “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” enters the classroom and announces, “Don’t bug, your girl is back.”
The song “Alright” by Supergrass, which fans will undoubtedly recognize from the 1995 film’s soundtrack, plays in the background as Silverstone dons a sparkling gold “C” necklace.
The YouTube footage is labeled, “The world’s best shopper returns for Rakuten’s big game commercial,” enticing viewers to sign up for the cash-back site.
A still image from the whole advertisement has Silverstone holding a pink pen topped with a fuzzy ball, just like her character did in the famous 1990s film.
The actress was evidently delighted to reprise her “Clueless” role, as yesterday she posted a TikTok video of herself standing at the class podium and twirling gum while wearing a tartan suit. She wrote, “I’m just going to leave this here.”
She later posted the teaser film to her TikTok account with the caption “It appears the cat has escaped from the designer handbag” and a purse emoji, while tagging the official Rakuten TikTok.
This is not the first time Silverstone has reintroduced the yellow plaid; in her very first TikTok post in 2021, she wore a blazer similar to the one she wears in the film while commenting “Ugh! As if… I’d never join TikTok.”
The author, who recreated one of the film’s iconic moments with co-star Stacey Dash in November, has also inspired others to adopt the yellow plaid look.
In the past few years, everyone from Cara Delevingne to Harry Styles has worn a Cher-inspired outfit. Silverstone applauded Styles for his plaid jacket in 2021, posting a collage on Instagram showing him sporting the style alongside some Clueless photos.
She wrote, “Cher would be so honored (and completely approve!!) of this chic look.”
Regarding her Super Bowl advertisement, we have no doubt that the Valley Girl will support Rihanna’s halftime performance.
