After 10-month-old baby dies, more than 2 million baby swings and rockers are being recalled

A crawling 10-month-old infant was fatally trapped in the hanging straps of a popular children’s swing and rocker, prompting a recall of more than two million units.

The goods are being recalled due to the risk of babies who are crawling being entangled in the straps that hang underneath the seats when they are not in use. According to a notification made by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission and Thorley Industries, another infant had neck injuries before being rescued by a caregiver.
The recall includes two million MamaRoo swings and 220,000 RockaRoo rockers offered by Thorley’s 4moms brand at BuyBuy Baby, Target, 4moms.com, and Amazon.com.

The goods, ranging in price from $160 to $250, were sold from January 2010 to August 2022 prior to the August 15 recall.

The CPSC reported that an additional 60,000 MamaRoo swings and 10,000 RockaRoo rockers were marketed in Canada.

Product line 4moms received two instances of newborn entrapment, including one fatality, which caused the recall; however, there have been no incidences involving the RockaRoo.

MamaRoo versions 1.0 and 2.0 (model number 4M-005), version 3.0 (model number 1026), and version 4.0 with a three-point harness are the particular models being recalled (model number 1037).

The model number of the recalled RockaRoo rocker is 4M-012. The model numbers are located on the product bases.

The CPSC recommends parents of crawling newborns to immediately cease using the recalled swings and rockers and to put them in an inaccessible location.

“Consumers should immediately contact 4moms to register for a free strap fastener that prevents the straps from spreading beneath the swing while not in use.”

Gary Waters, CEO of 4moms, wrote in an email, “We are profoundly disturbed by the two occurrences that happened when infants slid beneath the seat of unoccupied MamaRoo swings.”

He said, “The free strap fastening kit we’ve devised is an easy-to-install remedy that we feel will avoid future instances.”

4moms said they would immediately contact all known consumers.

The recall comes only months after the Biden administration cautioned parents about using newborn rockers for sleep, noting at least 14 fatalities between 2009 and 2021 that were related to such items.

Fisher-Price rockers, which sold more than 17 million units, were associated to 13 child fatalities in 2019, while Kids2 rockers, which sold 1.8 million units, were linked to one infant fatality.
