A tragic incident occurred off the southern coast of Italy in the Ionian Sea, where a wooden boat carrying over 100 migrants encountered difficulties and sank on Sunday. The incident, near the coastal town of Crotone in the Calabria region, claimed the lives of more than 30 migrants, including a baby a few months old, while 50 others were rescued by the Italian coast guard and firefighters.
According to reports, the wooden boat broke apart and debris was scattered on the beach at Steccato di Cutro. It was unclear where the boat had set sail from, but it is common for migrant vessels to depart from Turkish or Egyptian shores and arrive on the remote stretches of Italy’s southern coastline without the assistance of the coast guard or humanitarian rescue vessels.
The nationalities of the migrants were not immediately disclosed, and some reports suggested that there may have been as many as 180 people aboard the ill-fated vessel. Crotone Mayor Vincenzo Voce expressed his condolences and announced that the city would provide spaces in the cemetery for the deceased.
