The civil rights organization AfriForum desires a position as a monitor in the event of a calamity including load shedding in order to prevent the looting of finances and resources.
AfriForum requests that the national disaster management of the Department of Cooperative Government and Traditional Affairs participate in its advisory forum. If President Cyril Ramaphosa declares the present power situation a state of emergency, this will occur.
Ramaphosa stated earlier this week that he is exploring load-shedding as a solution to the country’s electricity crisis. It will be comparable to the state of emergency caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Access to this forum will guarantee that other role players, such as AfriForum, serve as resource watchdogs in the event of a load shedding state of calamity. Nationally, AfriForum has 165 branches and 160 neighborhood watches. In addition, it has national communication and drone networks, expertise, and other resources for emergency management.
The police have seized eleven firearms, ammo, police uniforms, and two radios.
“During the Covid-19 pandemic and the 2022 floods in KwaZulu-Natal, the ANC demonstrated their inability to effectively manage a disaster,” says Tarien Cooks, Disaster Management Specialist for AfriForum.
“The greatest issue was the mismanagement of cash and the inability to complete repairs due to theft and fraud. It is regrettable that the administration must announce a catastrophe in order to address service delivery.”
AfriForum asserts that the government might have averted the potential declaration of a state of emergency by taking swift action. Risk reduction is a global movement so that if a calamity were to occur, its effects may be avoided and its financial impact diminished.
Cooks stated that because the ANC administration has no plans in place, it has let down all of its population. Government must permit key players such as AfriForum to participate in the advisory forum for the load-shedding emergency.
