Derek Jeter, a Yankees legend, disclosed that he used a teammate’s golden thong to break out of what he termed as “the worst offensive stretch of my career.”
Jeter participated in the True Confessions segment on “The Tonight Show,” in which Jimmy Fallon and his guests are given two envelopes, one carrying a true, embarrassing story and the other a fictitious one.
Jeter recited the prompt, “I once wore a thong in public in front of thousands of people.”
Fallon and singer Rita Ora were tasked with questioning Jeter to determine whether or not “The Captain” wore the undergarment.
Jeter explained: “It is the truth.” Let me explain why I will ultimately regret playing this game.
Jeter stated that he had a new colleague who would hang a gold thong from his locker and wear it beneath his uniform in an attempt to overcome his batting struggles.
According to reports, the mystery teammate is Jason Giambi, the Yankees’ first baseman from 2002 to 2008, who says he only wears it when “desperate to get out of a big slump.”
“I endured the worst offensive stretch of my career in 2004,” Jeter stated. Every time I walked in, he would point at the thong.
Jeter was 0-for-32 at the plate prior to his capitulation.
On April 29, 2004, while wearing the thong, he hit a home run on the first pitch he encountered against the Oakland Athletics.
“The golden thong is renowned. It has always been a hit,” Giambi told NJ.com in 2015. It was his first decline. I don’t believe he has ever experienced a career slump. He’s unbelievable. Obviously, he was required to remove the gold thong.
Jeter finished the year with a.292 batting average, 188 hits, 78 RBIs, and 23 home runs. He was nominated for All-Star, won his first Gold Glove Award, and helped lead the Yankees to the AL Championship Series.
