A pro-choice senatorial candidate from Rhode Island claims that her opponent struck her during a Roe v. Wade protest.

Republican police officer Jeann Lugo is accused of striking Rhode Island Political Cooperative Chairwoman Jennifer Rourke twice in the face on Friday night in a startling incident captured on video and uploaded on Twitter.

After Rourke, a Democrat, spoke out at a Roe v. Wade rally in Providence, Lugo allegedly ‘violently attacked’ her, according to Rourke. At the time of the alleged encounter, Lugo was not on duty.

Providence police have acknowledged that they are looking into an off-duty officer’s actions at the event. According to the department, the officer was put on paid administrative leave while a criminal investigation and administrative review were being conducted.
