While performing a search and detect operation in Kidal, a peacekeeper on a MINUSMA Force security patrol was critically injured by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED).

El-Ghassim Wane, Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Mali and Head of MINUSMA, strongly condemns the incident. He expresses his heartfelt sympathies to the departed peacekeeper’s government, as well as his family and brothers in arms.

Since the beginning of 2022, there have been many IED-related assaults on MINUSMA uniformed personnel, killing a number of peacekeepers and injuring a number of others.

This recent incident highlights the Mission’s operating environment’s complexity as well as the security problems it encounters on a daily basis,” El-Ghassim Wane stated.

“I applaud the dedication of our Explosive Ordnance Disposal crews, who risk their own lives to protect the lives of their coworkers and the civilian population.” Their contribution is critical to the success of our operations,” he continued.

Remembering that attacks on peacekeepers can be considered war crimes under international law, the Special Representative emphasizes the importance of identifying and prosecuting those responsible for hostile acts against MINUSMA.

He reaffirmed the Mission’s commitment to carrying out its mandate in Mali in the interests of peace and security. APO Group distributed this on behalf of the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA).
