A man buys a £1million for £5,000

Hasan Rezvan, 75, moved to the UK from Cyprus in 1970 and purchased a four-bed terraced house in Brixton for £5,000.

Despite the area’s troubled past, including riots in the 80s and a reputation for drugs and violence in the 90s, Hasan has lived on Coldharbour Lane with little trouble.

He stated that while there were once frequent fights and police activity nearby, it has significantly improved, and he feels safe.

The value of Hasan’s property has skyrocketed over the years, with his home now worth £1million.

However, he stated that he doesn’t have the money in his pocket and that any earnings from selling the property would likely be lost to the Cypriot healthcare system if he were to retire there.

He considers his current home, where he has lived for 50 years, as his true home.

According to Rightmove, home prices in SW9 have surged since the early noughties, starting at an average of £200,000 and rising to around £600,000.

Terraced houses in the area can sell for well over one million pounds, while a semi-detached can go for as much as two million.

A four-bed terrace on Coldharbour Lane (just like Hasan’s) sold for £1,075,000 in June 2021.

Hasan’s advice for young people hoping to own a home is to make sacrifices, pointing out his old, worn black leather shoes as a symbol of his own contentment.

He believes that young people need to be willing to make similar sacrifices if they want to own a home.
