A man, 65, from Surrey and another, 37, from Kent, are accused of malicious communications over an email sent to the Ashton-under-Lyne MP

Following the abuse delivered by email to Labour deputy leader Angela Rayner, two further males have been detained.

A 65-year-old man from Surrey and a 37-year-old man from Kent are charged with malicious communications in connection with an email sent to the Ashton-under-Lyne MP on May 2.

Both individuals have been freed while an investigation is ongoing, according to Greater Manchester Police.

With the most recent arrests, there are now eight persons being held as part of “Operation Octant,” the investigation into abuse and threats made against Ms. Rayner.

“GMP won’t tolerate abuse, and that includes online abuse in its many forms, including text, email, or social media,” said Detective Sergeant Christopher Dean of the GMP.

“We always investigate extensively to bring the culprits to justice.”

“If anyone has experienced abuse, whether it be verbal, physical, or online, they should phone police and one of our specially trained officers will be on hand,” the statement reads.

Anyone with information regarding related occurrences is encouraged to contact the police at 0161 856 9262, by dialing 101, or through the LiveChat feature on the GMP website. Call Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111 or go online to remain anonymous.

Benjamin Iliffe, 36, of Chatteris, Cambridgeshire, was given a 15-week prison term that was suspended for 18 months in October of last year.

Iliffe acknowledged writing the threatening email and using marijuana when he appeared via video link from the Thorpe Wood police station in Peterborough.

Over email, he warned Ms. Rayner to “guard your back and your kids.”

In the wake of Sir David Amess’ stabbing, Ms. Rayner’s spokesman earlier acknowledged that she had been the target of abuse in the form of threatening phone calls, emails, and letters. He added that the messages had an effect on her children and employees.

A two-year restraining order prohibiting him from making direct or indirect contact with Ms. Rayner, discussing her on social media, and visiting her office was issued.
