Today at Glastonbury, Greta Thunberg spoke to the crowd without using any harsh language but warned them that they were facing a “complete natural catastrophe” brought on by “forces of greed.”
At 5:15 p.m., a 19-year-old Swedish climate activist spoke on the Pyramid Stage about climate change, claiming that the current crisis is “not the new normal.”
She denounced “lying” political figures while admonishing them that “together we can do the seemingly impossible” and “we can still avert the worse repercussions.”
“A climate and ecological emergency is only getting started. This is not the new normal; until we put the needs of people and the environment above personal gain and greed, the situation will only worsen.
She said, “We need to make major changes to our cultures” and “We need rapid significant emissions reductions.”
“Our fight for the natural world is restricted to a desperate struggle to escape a total natural catastrophe,” she continued. “The forces of greed and profit and planetary destructions are so powerful.”
We should be fighting for the well-being of people and the environment, but instead we are up against those who are determined to obliterate both. Our political leaders are free to say one thing today and act completely otherwise.
As new coal mines, oil fields, and pipelines are opened, they can claim that a climate emergency exists. Not only is lying by our leaders now socially acceptable, but it is also essentially what we anticipate of them.
