Allegations Against Minister of State for Defence
The Zamfara State government has made serious accusations against the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, regarding the mishandling of over 1 billion Naira in an unfinished hotel project in Gusau.
These claims were revealed in a statement released by Sulaiman Bala, the Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the current Zamfara governor.
Unauthorized Payments and Overpayment
According to the statement, the former governor authorized a payment of 1,011,801,545.79 billion Naira to 180 Circle Construction & Engineering Ltd. for the construction of Gusau Motel, a project that remains incomplete.
The Zamfara State government asserts that Matawalle overpaid the contractor by N667,713,161.64 million.
Key Points from the Statement
The statement emphasizes the need for transparency and highlights key points from the investigation. It reveals that the contract for the Gusau Motel project was awarded on July 16, 2020, with a total cost of N1,149,288,084.25.
However, irregularities surfaced as the contractor vanished after receiving mobilization fees and only commenced on-site work after a year.
Disbursement Details and Project Abandonment
The Zamfara government outlines the disbursement of funds to the contractor, indicating that despite irregular payments, essential components of the project, such as the multi-purpose hall, restaurant, and other facilities, have not yet begun.
The overpayment by 667,713,161.64 million Naira is cited as the reason behind the project’s abandonment.
Commitment to Accountability
Expressing deep concern, the statement concludes by stating the government’s commitment to uncovering any actions that breach the people’s trust and holding those responsible accountable.
The government reiterates its dedication to the principles of the Rescue Mission and ensuring financial misconduct does not go unpunished.
