This November, voters in 36 states will go to the polls to choose their governors, and a record number of women are running for the position. State leaders have been in the news recently for tackling some of the most important topics, such as COVID-19 and abortion. A record number of women are now capturing their party’s candidacy as the primary season comes to an end in the coming weeks.
In 2022, 69 women registered to run for governor, breaking the previous record of 61 from 2018. According to the Center for American Women and Politics, which keeps track of female candidates, 23 have so far won their primary. When 16 women won their primaries in 2018, the previous record was also established.
Nine women are serving as governors throughout the nation at the moment, tying a record that was initially established in 2004, and this year may surpass it.
According to Debbie Walsh, the director of the Center for American Women and Politics, “what you’re looking at is the possibility of 11 or 12, maybe even 13 women sitting as governor at any same moment.” You have the power to surpass the mysterious nine number, where we have been trapped for so long.
Both major parties are seeing an increase in the number of women winning governorship primaries. Democrats have nominated at least 15 women for governor, breaking the previous record of 12, which was achieved in 2018. Republicans have nominated eight women for governor so far this year, breaking the previous record of five established in 1986, 2006, and 2010.
Walsh cited previous Supreme Court rulings, such as the overturning of the landmark abortion statute Roe v. Wade, as evidence that “it’s necessary to concentrate now even more on the states because what we’re witnessing is a true transfer of power back to the states again.”

Healey stated, “As a woman, I bring a special perspective to this to be able to assist design policies that benefit families. I also contribute a perspective on what it’s like to be left out, I say.
Republican women are seeking to increase their presence in state leadership at the same time.

She is running against Colorado’s current Democratic governor, Jared Polis, in a contest that Cook Political Report ranks as a “solid D.” If won, she would be the state’s first female governor.
A record number of women have been nominated for governor this year, but there are also a record number of women running against other women at the top of the ticket. Both major party candidates have been women in four separate times. There are five governorships this year when both of the main parties’ candidates are female.
It implies that a woman will serve as governor of Alabama, Arizona, Iowa, Michigan, and Oregon regardless of who wins the election in November. There is a female incumbent governor in four of the elections. Two women have made nominations for the vacant seat in Arizona.
The proportion of women in statewide office is improving, but there is still a long way to go. Even if a record 13 women are elected governors in November, parity will not be achieved.
