A video on TikTok has been widely shared, showing a white woman calling the police on two young black men who were shovelling snow outside her house. The incident occurred in Rockford, Illinois, where the two young men were attempting to clear the sidewalk in front of their friend’s father’s driveway as a neighbourly act of service.
The woman confronted them, demanding that they leave and threatening to call the police.
She eventually made the call, reporting disorderly conduct and claiming an “urgent” need for help. She also stated that the men were African American and that she did not get along with them. Two police officers arrived at the scene, but according to the Daily Beast, a police report was not taken, and the officers were only there for less than 20 minutes.
Gregory McAdory, one of the young men involved, claimed that this was not the first time the woman had threatened to call the police on them. He said that during a previous incident, the woman had become upset that they had touched her lawn while shoveling a driveway.
McAdory speculated that the woman may have mental health issues and was unsure if racism played a role in her behavior. He added that he did not want to be arrested for such a minor incident.
In the video, the woman can be seen shoveling snow back onto the sidewalk as the young men attempt to explain that they were only trying to do something nice for her. She also accuses them of trespassing, while they assert that the sidewalk is public property. The incident has drawn attention to the issue of racial profiling and discrimination in everyday situations.
