Where Was ‘The Last of Us’ Filmed for HBO? Premiere Filming Locations

A world overrun by infected half-humans is often the last place you would want to be. But The Last of Us makes everything appear so appealing. The new thriller on HBO is as dismal as it is visually breathtaking, filled with weather-beaten structures and eerie cityscapes. The series does a remarkable job of conveying the amazement of the video game with the same name.

To do this, the The Last of Us team had to be inventive. Consider this your guide to some of the most recognizable locales in the HBO thriller, as well as upcoming destinations.

Where Did They Film The Last of Us?

Canada is the short answer to this lengthy question. The majority of this adaptation of a video game about a cross-country journey in the United States was shot in the north. In fact, it has been described as the largest production ever shot in Canada.

The majority of the filming took place in Calgary, Edmonton, Canmore, Fort Macleod, and Waterton. And we already know the precise locations of several of the most important sequences in this series. The Last of Us begins in earnest in 2003, two decades prior to the global pandemic, after a lengthy TV interview devoted to exposition. As Joel (Pedro Pascal) attempts to bring his daughter Sarah (Nico Parker) to safety, they pass through a number of familiar Alberta landmarks. In one scene, Joel and Sarah rush through Evelyn’s Memory Lane Diner. Sullivan Road in High River was used to represent Joel and Sarah’s neighborhood.

Next, we visit not-Boston, where we meet up with Joel twenty years after the awful death of his daughter. Edmonton was used for these sequences, and the Alberta Legislature Building stood in for the Massachusetts State House. All of the pictures of overgrown highways following the pandemic were filmed in Calgary.

We are also aware of the filming locations of upcoming important plot points. Jackson, Wyoming, where Joel’s brother Tommy (Gabriel Luna) resides with the Fireflies, was filmed in Canmore, a picturesque mountain hamlet. Many of the show’s small-town scenes were based on Fort Macleod, a mainstay of this universe. Many of the hiking sequences involving Joel and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) were filmed in Waterton Lakes National Park instead of Colorado.

Want to find out where the most emotionally upsetting scenes will occur? Certain sequences were filmed at Northland Village Mall, as well as at Mount Royal University and Southern Alberta Institute of Technology for college scenes. If you’ve played The Last of Us and The Last of Us: Left Behind, you already know what will occur.

It is expected that the production will earn over $200 million in total revenue for Alberta. Premier Jason Kenney told CTV News, “This is a true Alberta success story, a billion-dollar industry springing up right before our eyes.”
