Wes Brown, a former Manchester United player, described how a bus brawl resulted in a reprimand from Sir Alex Ferguson and, strangely enough, a salary raise.
The defender, who entered the first team at the age of 18, spent an incredible 14 years at Old Trafford under Sir Alex. He played both full-back and center-back for multiple great United teams, notably the 1999 treble-winning club, and was an underappreciated member of those teams.
Brown undoubtedly saw Ferguson’s famed hair dryer treatment several times and even experienced it. And he has now related a shocking tale of a confrontation with the Scot that turned out to be to his advantage.
Brown stated: “I got pro at 17 and began playing at 18, and at that time I still hadn’t signed another contract, so I was probably earning around £250 a week.” Brown was speaking on the Football Social Daily podcast.
“And after that, I got into a fight on a bus headed home, the 192 into Piccadilly, since I used buses everywhere.
What the f*** are you doing on the bus, my boss Ferguson asked me after learning about what occurred on the bus.
I said, “I’ve always taken the bus, boss,” and he yelled at me, asking me to take a cab.
“I told to him that I couldn’t afford a cab since it would be £14 a day, £7 from my place to Salford,” the former defender said.
“I’m still living with my mother, and I have to purchase snarky Ralph Laurens for going out and give her some money. Then he stopped yelling at me. Then he said, “OK, we’ll figure it out.”
“And basically, that’s how everything went. Hence, the original event was forgotten, which made me delighted.
Under Sir Alex, Brown, 43, won a record-breaking five Premier League championships. As he joined Sunderland in 2011, his illustrious career in Manchester came to an end. He then retired in 2018 after spending time in India.
