US battles with wild storm claiming lives

A wild storm has brought severe weather and devastation from the South to the Northeast of the US, leaving at least 10 people dead and millions without power. Golf ball-sized hail and tornadoes caused chaos as the weather front hit several states, including Kentucky, Alabama, and Arkansas.

The storm also dumped 17 feet of snow in California, leaving residents trapped in the San Bernadino Valley. Officials reported deaths in Alabama, Mississippi, and California. More than 60 million people were under threat of severe storms, with further high wind alerts in Texas to Pennsylvania affecting 20 million people.

The storm has caused widespread power outages and travel chaos, with residents in Kentucky, Michigan, Tennessee, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Alabama all affected.

The National Weather Service warns that heavy snow and freezing rain may continue into the weekend, affecting the Upper Midwest through New England.

Flash flood warnings have been issued across 400 miles, with over 20 million under flood watches. The Storm Prediction Center also issued tornado warnings for more than eight million people across several states.

The severe weather has caused significant destruction, including a 55mph tornado in Reidland, Kentucky, and a man’s death in Talladega County, Alabama after a tree fell on his truck. New York and New England are predicted to receive between six and 12 inches of snow, while the West Coast suffers heavy snowfall.

Freezing rain and sleet are also expected in New England, with reports of golf-ball-sized hail hitting several states. California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency to help recover.
