Analysis reveals almost 250 care homes in UK offer inadequate service

Recent analysis shows that nearly 250 care homes across England are offering an inadequate service, with some residents living in unclean and unsafe conditions.

The South East region was identified as the worst performing area, with 44 facilities not up to standard, and 14 of those in Kent. London had 17 care homes rated poorly, whereas the North East was the best-performing region with only three care homes rated as inadequate.

According to the Care Quality Commission, when a care home is rated inadequate, the watchdog takes enforcement action against the centre, ranging from deregistering poorly performing facilities to take criminal action against providers under whose watch significant harm has occurred or is likely to occur.

Data shows that 239 care homes were rated as ‘inadequate’ and 2,530 ‘required improvement.’ MailOnline analysed inspection reports and created an interactive map showing the care homes in England rated inadequate or requiring improvement, with some currently under review, and a new report to be published on completion.

Two service providers, Achieve Together and Modus Care, are listed as currently running five inadequate facilities each, making them the poorest-performing providers in the country. An excerpt from a report given to an Achieve Together Hampshire care home for the under-65s specializing in autistic and mental health needs found that it did not offer residents a service that provided them with safe, effective, compassionate and high-quality care and that it ‘was not clean or homely.’

Modus Care operated five care homes in Cornwall that have not yet been inspected by the CQC and were therefore still rated as inadequate.

The Care Quality Commission stated that although most care homes are ‘outstanding’, they are not afraid to take action when inspections find that people are not receiving care that meets their needs and expectations. If individuals have concerns about the care they or their loved ones receive, they are encouraged to share their experiences with the CQC.
