Unsupervised 3-year-old girl, accidentally shot sister in Texas

On Sunday, a tragic incident occurred in Texas where a 3-year-old girl found a loaded gun in her home and accidentally shot her 4-year-old sister, causing her death.

According to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, the girls were in the bedroom of their apartment on Bammel North Houston Road in Houston, where they lived with their parents, at around 8 p.m.

The five adults present in the apartment, who were all family members or friends, were in other parts of the apartment, leaving the girls unsupervised.

One parent assumed the other was watching the girls, and they were left alone in the bedroom.

It was then that the 3-year-old found the loaded pistol and fired a single shot, killing her sister.

Upon hearing the gunshot, family members rushed into the room and found the 4-year-old unresponsive.

The police were called, and upon their arrival, the girl was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Harris County District Attorney’s Office will determine if any of the adults present will face charges based on the ongoing preliminary police investigation.

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez expressed his condolences, stating that the incident was another avoidable gun death.

He stressed the importance of being a responsible gun owner and securing firearms in a safe place.

Gonzalez also noted that such tragedies are preventable and called for more action to prevent such incidents.

According to Everytown for Gun Safety, a gun safety advocacy group, at least 58 unintentional shootings by children have occurred in the United States this year, resulting in 22 deaths and 37 injuries.

Last year, there were at least 353 unintentional shootings by children, resulting in 156 deaths and 212 injuries.
