The UK government has announced new measures aimed at reducing the number of migrants arriving in the country via “irregular routes,” such as by small boat.
The proposed Illegal Migration Bill will impose indefinite re-entry bans on all migrants who enter the UK by such means. Those caught will also face a lifetime ban on settling permanently in the UK or becoming citizens
. The bill is also expected to set out measures to make it easier for the Home Office to remove irregular migrants and to restrict the right to claim asylum.
UK Chancellor Rishi Sunak, who has pledged to “stop the boats,” said illegal migration was “not fair on British taxpayers, it is not fair on those who come here legally and it is not right that criminal gangs should be allowed to continue their immoral trade.”
Labour has not made small boats one of its election missions. Current re-entry bans are limited to a maximum of 10 years, but the new proposals will mean illegal entry will bar entry for life, even as a visitor.
The proposed measures are likely to impact those from safe countries such as Albania who may reconsider making an illegal crossing if it means never being allowed back.
New laws will also restrict Channel migrants from using human rights laws to avoid removal from Britain. The bill will be published ahead of a key summit between UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday.
Chancellor Sunak is expected to request a “substantial” increase in beach patrols to prevent migrants from leaving French shores.
Human rights campaigners have argued that the measures are a breach of refugee conventions, and ministers are expected to face opposition. The bill is also expected to tighten modern slavery laws, which are being exploited by migrants to delay removal.
