Two years following a tragic stabbing, justice was finally served

Musa Mthethwa received a lengthy prison sentence in October 2020 for the murder of Thulane Mabaso in Marikana.

This Monday, Mthethwa stood before the Evander regional court and was sentenced to thirteen years in prison.

Mabaso had witnessed a stabbing incident involving Mthethwa, 38, and his friend. He attempted to stop the brawl, but Mthethwa turned on him and stabbed him in the neck.

Police spokesperson Selvy Mohlala stated that Mabaso sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the spot. Mohlala stated, “The accused fled the scene but was later located and apprehended.”

“A murder charge and an assault with the intent to cause great bodily harm charge were filed in relation to the victim who was stabbed in the hand.”

Mthethwa was held in detention until December 2020, when he was granted bail.

Lieutenant-General Semakaleng Manamela, provincial police commissioner in Mpumalanga, praised the investigative team, the prosecution team, and the judiciary for “an outstanding effort that resulted in a well-deserved sentence.”
