Witnesses were left horrified as they recounted the tragic incident in Liverpool where a man and a woman lost their lives after driving their Mercedes into a flooded road and becoming trapped. The witnesses described witnessing eerie “red lights under water” and a scene reminiscent of a “burst dam.” Despite efforts by bystanders to assist, the unfortunate pair could not be saved.

The incident unfolded on Queens Drive in Mossley Hill, Liverpool. Merseyside Police launched an investigation into the tragedy after receiving reports of the submerged vehicle with two occupants inside. The man and woman, traveling in a black Mercedes Class 180, were taken to the hospital but were later pronounced dead.

Rebecca Wilson, who was driving along Queens Drive, recounted her near encounter with the floodwaters. She mentioned that the water level was approximately 15 feet high and speculated that a burst pipe might have contributed to the flooding. As she maneuvered to avoid the water, she witnessed what seemed like red lights submerged beneath the water, prompting her to alert the police.

Local residents had long been aware of issues with the road, which dipped under a bridge, leading to flooding during heavy rainfall. The road had witnessed several incidents of vehicles getting stuck due to the flooding. Witnesses expressed their concerns that the road had been problematic for some time, with multiple vehicles being stranded in the deep water over the last few months.

Detective Chief Inspector Mike Dalton expressed condolences to the families of the victims and acknowledged the efforts of the public, police officers, and rescue services at the scene. He indicated that an investigation was underway to understand the circumstances surrounding the tragedy. Road closures remained in effect as authorities continued their investigation, and anyone with relevant information or footage was encouraged to come forward.
