Calocane, who identified himself as Adam Mendes, stood in the dock on Saturday, flanked by three security officers, wearing a grey T-shirt and jogging bottoms.

The Victims and Alleged Offenses

The 31-year-old defendant is accused of murdering first-year students Grace O’Malley-Kumar and Barnaby Webber, as well as school caretaker Ian Coates, in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Calocane is also charged with the attempted murder of pedestrians Wayne Birkett, Marcin Gawronski, and Sharon Miller, as a van belonging to Mr. Coates was allegedly used to target individuals on Milton Street and Upper Parliament Street.

Identity Confirmation and Pleas

During the court proceedings, Calocane only confirmed his name as “Adam Mendes,” his date of birth, and his lack of fixed abode.

He did not enter any pleas to the charges presented against him.

Details of the Attacks

The victims, 19-year-old medical student Ms. O’Malley-Kumar from Woodford and history student Mr. Webber from Taunton, were found fatally stabbed on Ilkeston Road at around 4 a.m.

Mr. Coates, 65, was later discovered stabbed to death on Magdala Road after his van was reportedly stolen.

Calocane is alleged to have used the stolen van to drive at pedestrians on Milton Street and South Sherwood Street.

Hospital Updates and IOPC Investigation

Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust stated that two patients from the van incidents are in stable condition, while one has been discharged.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) reported that a marked police car had sight of the suspect’s vehicle for less than a minute before the collision with pedestrians on South Sherwood Street.

Grief and Tributes

The family of Mr. Webber expressed their “complete devastation” over the “senseless murder” of their son, describing him as a “beautiful, brilliant, bright young man.”

Ms. O’Malley-Kumar’s family remembered her as a “truly wonderful and beautiful young lady” who will be deeply missed.

Two of Mr. Coates’ sons conveyed the profound impact of his death, stating that it had shaken everyone, emphasizing that he did not deserve such a fate.

Former Student Status and Court Decision

Police disclosed that the suspect was a former University of Nottingham student but clarified that this connection was unrelated to the attack.
