Man Remanded in Custody for Fatally Stabbing Friend During Altercation

A 38-year-old man, Raphael Agu, has been remanded in the Ikoyi Custodial Centre in Lagos State following accusations that he stabbed his friend, Stanley Ugo, resulting in Ugo’s death.

Fight and Stabbing Incident

On May 25, 2023, a fight broke out between Agu and Ugo in the Ogudu area of Lagos State.

During the altercation, Agu allegedly stabbed Ugo in the stomach with a knife.

Court Proceedings

Agu was brought before a Magistrates’ Court in Yaba, Lagos on Tuesday to face charges of murder.

The prosecution stated that Agu had received N15,000 from a developer constructing a building near the Transformer Bus Stop in Ogudu.

The money was intended to be shared among the local youth known as “area boys,” which Agu allegedly did.

However, Ugo and another person confronted Agu, claiming that he had not distributed the money equally.

This led to an argument and eventually escalated into a physical fight.

The Stabbing and Legal Charges

During the fight, Agu reportedly retrieved a knife and stabbed Ugo in the stomach, resulting in his death.

The prosecutor, Thomas Nurudeen, informed the court that this act contravened Section 222 and was punishable under Section 233 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2015.

Nurudeen presented a remand application, requesting that the defendant be kept in custody for 30 days pending legal advice from the Director of Legal Prosecution.

Court Decision and Next Steps

Magistrate P.E Nwaka granted the remand request and ordered that Agu be kept in the Ikoyi Custodial Center.

The magistrate also instructed that a duplicate case file be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal counsel.

Furthermore, the magistrate adjourned the case until July 5, 2023.
