Trial of Kyle Daniels: Mom of accused victim sobs in court

During the trial of a swim instructor accused of sexually abusing young girls, the mother weeps as she recalls the time her daughter informed her, “My teacher touches me there.”

Kyle Daniels is accused of molesting students sexually at the Mosman Swim Centre.

He is on trial for 21 counts involving nine claimed juvenile victims.

The court heard heartbreaking evidence from one of the heartbroken girl’s mothers.

A woman cried in court as she recalled the moment her daughter told her that her swim instructor allegedly groped her during a class.

The girl was one of nine alleged victims of former swimming instructor Kyle Daniels, who is on trial for sexually assaulting his students at Mosman Swim Centre on Sydney’s north shore between 2018 and 2019. Daniels is facing 21 charges related to sexually touching his students at the facility.

He has pled not guilty to five counts of sexual intercourse with a child under the age of 10, eight counts of sexual contact with a child, and eight counts of indecent assault, as well as two alternative charges.

Daniels is accused of groping the girls, who were under 10 years old at the time, both above and below their swimwear.

While attending college, the now 23-year-old had been working part-time as an instructor.

Daniels (pictured) has pleaded not guilty to sexually touching his students, including five counts of sexual intercourse with a child under the age of 10 and eight counts of sexual touching of a child, as well as eight counts of indecent assault.

During a previous hearing, Daniels is seen leaving court with his mother Janine (pictured).

Wednesday, the mother spoke before the jury about the time her daughter said her teacher had touched her between the legs.

The court was informed that the mother picked up her girls from dance class and chose to speak with them after media reports about Daniels’ arrest in March 2019 surfaced.

She told the court, “I was sitting in the driver’s seat when I turned around and said, “I have something to speak to you about,” and they responded, “OK sure.”

She instructed her girls, “You are aware that it is inappropriate for anyone to touch your private parts.”

The woman stated that she elaborated and “emphasized the point that regardless of who it was, it was unacceptable.”

The woman told the court that her daughter spoke to her in the car as they were finishing dinner.

The court heard that the blank line resembled the term “vagina” in a note a young girl allegedly wrote regarding an interaction with Daniels.

As a swimming coach, Kyle Daniels (pictured) is accused of sexually assaulting nine young girls.

The child asked her mother, “Mum, are you aware that my swimming instructor touches me there?”

When her mother questioned her further, she claimed the instructor ‘pushed her along’ by stroking her there while she was performing breaststroke.

The mother stated that her daughter claimed he grabbed her as she was performing breaststroke and pulled her forward.

The woman informed the court that she afterwards had a private conversation with her daughter and inquired further about her swimming instructor’s alleged touch.

The woman became obviously disturbed as she explained, “She didn’t really want to talk; she merely appeared terrified… she said it was difficult to convey.”

She cried as she stated, “I asked whether it would be simpler to demonstrate on a teddy bear.”

The mother testified that her daughter placed the teddy bear on its back and placed her hand between its legs.

She claimed, “When I questioned her if she felt it was wrong at the time, she acknowledged it did seem bad.”

Earlier in the week, the court heard the young girl’s testimony, which revealed that she believed the alleged sexual touching was a “natural aspect” of her lessons.

The young lady explained that she didn’t want her mother to notify anyone since she “didn’t think it was significant.”

The girl told the court, “I didn’t think there was anything to worry about because I assumed it was just what a swimming instructor does, even though it had never happened at previous swimming schools.”

When the child discovered that her mother had told her father, she expressed irritation.

Daniels is accused of sexually molesting his students between 2018 and 2019 at Mosman Swim Centre (pictured) on Sydney’s north coast.

She testified in court that her teacher had placed one hand on her bladder and the other on her privates.

The girl stated, “I believed that was how breaststroke was taught, even though that was not the case at my former school.”

On March 12, 2019, Daniels was arrested and transported to the Manly Police Station.

Following his arrest, authorities requested additional information from swim school parents and received complaints from other alleged victims.

The trial continues before Judge Kara Shead.
