Travis Head to open in Delhi and Indore

Australia’s selection team has been planning for the orderly transition of the generation that includes David Warner, Steve Smith, and Usman Khawaja for more than 12 months.

The promotion of  and Matt Renshaw’s presence on the tour of India are visible signs of the team’s blueprint for life after Warner’s exit from the Australian Test team. This exit may take place as soon as the forthcoming tour of England.

Head’s clear-eyed aggression is an ideal alternative to Warner in South Asia.

However, Renshaw’s ability to become a powerful opener with sound defence is highly valued in other environments, such as Australia and England.

There is a possibility that Head and Renshaw may be interchanged between opening and middle-order roles in the future.

Renshaw’s struggles in the first two Tests in India have technical origins.

He tried to return to the methods that served him well in 2017 but were caught propping half-forward.

However, he remains a key part of longer-term plans for the Test side beyond Warner, Smith, and Khawaja.

Senior players and selectors now have an open and more or less constant dialogue on plans.

They always discuss what is coming up, what’s important, and the best preparation for the team.

Warner stated he was wise to the prospect of being dropped from the Test side this year but still intended to continue as a white-ball international player either way.

Former captain Ricky Ponting spoke earlier this week about how he felt Warner had missed the ideal opportunity to retire on his terms at the SCG in January.

He suggested that retiring in front of his home crowd would have been the best way for Warner to finish his career.
