Tragic loss of daughter

A family has been left heartbroken after a series of tragic events that occurred in a short span of time. On September 4, 2022, Katie Davenport, a carer, jumped from a fire escape at a club in Southport, Merseyside, after getting into an altercation while on a night out with her work colleagues. She suffered traumatic brain injuries and had to undergo brain surgery at The Walton Centre, a neurology hospital, but she passed away 13 days later, with her boyfriend Niall by her side.

Katie’s sister, Lianne Clegg, described her as “the most beautiful, funniest girl with the most infectious laugh” and said that although she had struggled with her mental health over the years, she was in a good place and was “confident, outgoing and loving life”. Katie had recently passed her driving test, was saving up for a mortgage, had booked a holiday, and had gotten a second job in healthcare that she adored.

Katie’s funeral was held at the West Lancashire Cemetery and Crematorium on October 14, and tragically, her father suffered an epileptic fit and passed away a few hours later. At an inquest into Katie’s death on March 8, it was revealed that Katie’s father had an epileptic fit the night of her funeral and passed away. The family was devastated by the double tragedy.

At the inquest, senior coroner Julie Goulding gave a narrative conclusion and said that Katie died as a result of significant brain injuries, with insufficient evidence that she wanted to take her own life. Lianne, on behalf of the family and Niall, said that the impact of losing Katie had been devastating for the family, and she had tried to put together the events of that night, which had been painful and difficult.
