Tottenham closes gap on Arsenal with Harry Kane

Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Everton brought Tottenham to within one point of Premier League leaders Arsenal. Goals from Harry Kane and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg were vital in the victory.

Spurs have yet to drop a point at home in the Premier League or Champions League this season, but Antonio Conte has never coached a fluid offensive unit.

However, Kane’s brilliance is masking any flaws as the England captain has now scored 10 goals this season.

Four minutes from time, Kane assisted in setting up the second goal as the ball ultimately broke to Hojbjerg, whose deflected shot reached the top corner.

Spurs remain in third place, but behind Manchester City by only goal differential as the champions travel to Liverpool on Sunday.

Everton arrived at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with the joint-best defensive record in the Premier League, and their newfound resiliency under Frank Lampard ensured there would be no repeat of the 5-0 drubbing the Toffees endured in March.

However, scoring goals has been a problem for Lampard’s squad, and the lack of threat from the visitors left little doubt about the outcome after Kane’s penalty kick just before the hour mark.

After the break, Tottenham increased the pressure on the home team’s goalkeeper, Jordan Pickford, who had been relatively untroubled in the first half.

Son Heung-min then headed harmlessly into the Everton goalkeeper’s arms after Kane’s shot was blocked by Pickford.

However, Pickford was responsible for the first goal as he mishandled Matt Doherty’s strike and then knocked down Harry Kane as he attempted to recover the loose ball.

Kane missed one of the two penalties he attempted in Tottenham’s 3-2 triumph over Eintracht Frankfurt in the week.

Despite Pickford going the correct way, normal service was resumed when he drilled the ball into the bottom corner.

Lampard substituted Dominic Calvert-Lewin in quest of an equalizer, forcing Everton to break out of their shell in the closing 15 minutes.

However, this afforded Spurs more space on the counterattack, and when Kane sent Rodrigo Bentancur down the right flank, he found Hojbjerg, who used Son’s run to distract the Everton defense before shooting past Pickford.
