In Sacramento, California, Tom Thibodeau, head coach of the New York Knicks, has expressed his support for Knicks legend Patrick Ewing after the latter’s recent firing from Georgetown University.
Thibodeau and Ewing had worked together as assistant coaches under Jeff Van Gundy in Houston from 2004-07, and Thibodeau had been an assistant coach for the Knicks during Ewing’s final seasons with the team as a player.
Thibodeau commented that Ewing’s firing was unfortunate but that he had confidence that Ewing, whom he considers one of the all-time greats and possibly the greatest Knick of all time, would “bounce back.”
Thibodeau spoke highly of Ewing as a coach and a person and expressed his disappointment at the news. However, he emphasized that Ewing would be fine and that good things would be coming his way in the future.
Ewing was fired from Georgetown after the team’s combined record of 13-50 over the past two seasons, including a 7-25 record this year.
Despite the disappointing results, Thibodeau praised Ewing’s dedication to coaching and noted that Ewing would still be involved with Georgetown in the future.
Thibodeau also remarked on the state of college basketball, noting that it was in a state of flux due to the transfer portal and the Name, Image, Likeness (NIL) compensation policies.
He emphasized that success or failure was not solely the responsibility of any one person but was influenced by many factors.
