Human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, strongly criticized President Bola Tinubu’s administration for its recent announcement regarding the payment of N8,000 to 12 million Nigerian families for a period of six months, aimed at mitigating the effects of petrol subsidy removal.
Tinubu had disclosed this plan to transfer the funds to impoverished households in the country, and the details were included in a letter to the House of Representatives regarding a loan request for the social safety net program made during former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.
Sowore expressed his disappointment with the government’s approach, labeling it as a government of ‘renewed shege,’ and highlighted the lack of respect shown towards the Nigerian people.
Shehu Sani’s Warning to Recipients
Former Kaduna Central lawmaker, Shehu Sani, responded to President Bola Tinubu’s proposal of providing N8,000 as palliatives.
Through a post on Twitter, Sani cautioned the prospective beneficiaries of the N8,000 payment to offer prayers before accepting it, drawing a parallel with the previous administration’s introduction of N10,000 palliatives, which, according to him, resulted in further exacerbation of poverty.
Sani’s advice emphasized the potential pitfalls associated with the proposed monetary assistance and the need for caution when accepting such offers.
