“The Way of Water” surpasses the $2 billion mark worldwide

Exhibitor Relations said Sunday that “Avatar: The Way of Water” maintained its box office dominance with a projected $19.7 million in its sixth weekend of release in North America.

With domestic ticket sales of $598 million and foreign sales of $1.42 billion, the science-fiction blockbuster directed by James Cameron became the first film in the modern era to surpass the $2 billion milestone.

This makes the Disney/20thCentury picture only the sixth ever to break the $2 billion mark (not adjusted for inflation), although it is still $1.5 billion behind the all-time leader, the original “Avatar.”

Universal’s family-friendly “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” rose one spot from the previous weekend to take second place with $11.5 million for the Friday-through-Sunday frame.

The scary-doll movie “M3GAN” from Universal and Blumhouse Productions slid one spot to $9.8 million. Created as a friend for a young orphan, the film’s title doll gradually takes on a sinister life of her own.

Sony’s new film “Missing” placed fourth with $9.3 million. Storm Reid plays a teen anxious to locate her mother (Nia Long) when she disappears during a trip to Colombia.

Franchise Entertainment Research’s David A. Gross described the beginning as “impressive” for a criminal thriller and added, “The reviews are outstanding.”

And in fifth place, falling one rank from the previous weekend, with $9 million was Sony’s feel-good film “A Man Called Otto.” Tom Hanks portrays Ove, the protagonist of the renowned Swedish novel “A Man Called Ove.”

Additionally, “Avatar” continues to make millions of dollars on Box Office charts.

Completing the top 10 were:

“Plane” ($5.3 million)

“House Party” (1.8 million dollars)

“That One Time I Was Reborn as Slime” ($1.5 million)

Black Panther: Forever Wakanda ($1.4 million)

The Whale (1.3 million dollars)
