The South African government has joined the world in celebrating International Nelson Mandela Day, under the theme: “Do what you can, with what you have, where you are”

The theme for this year’s International Nelson Mandela Day, adopted by the entire world, is “Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.”

It has been 13 years since the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed July 18, the birthday of Nelson Mandela, as International Nelson Mandela Day.

Madiba urged everyone to honour him by supporting their communities after making the declaration.

Government officials will visit various communities today to help the needy by performing deeds of kindness and fostering community growth in response to this call.

Planting fruit and native trees as well as establishing food gardens are some of the activities being done to inform communities about the impact of climate change and food security.

A symbolic walk will also be held to draw attention to the scourge of femicide and gender-based violence.

A peaceful, nonviolent, and non-racist society was something that President Nelson Mandela devoted his life to promoting.

“The International Nelson Mandela Day in 2022 falls during a time of great sadness for many South Africans who have recently lost loved ones due to criminal activity.

“On this day, we call on South Africans to honour the ideals embodied by former President Mandela by fostering peace in their neighbourhoods and attempting to cooperate with the government in creating a South Africa that is safe for all, “said Phumla Williams, the general director of GCIS.
