2022 International Nelson Mandela Day

2022 International Nelson Mandela Day

Today, the South African government joins the rest of the world in commemorating International Nelson Mandela Day, with the theme “Do what you can, with what you have, where you are”.

It has been 13 years since the UN General Assembly proclaimed July 18, the birthday of Nelson Mandela, as International Nelson Mandela Day. Madiba urged everyone to honour him by supporting their communities after making the declaration.

Government officials will respond to this request by travelling to different towns to help the needy through acts of kindness and community improvement.

In order to inform people about the impact of climate change on food security, initiatives being carried out include planting fruit and native trees as well as creating food gardens.

Phumla Williams, GCIS Director-General, said, “The 2022 International Nelson Mandela Day takes place when several South Africans are mourning the death of their loved ones who have been killed recently through acts of criminality.

“On this day, we urge South Africans to remember the values that former President Mandela embodied by promoting peace in their communities and endeavour to work with the government in building a South Africa that is safe for all”.
