The end of the MLS season will see Argentine forward Gonzalo Higuain’s retirement.

Gonzalo Higuain, an Argentine forward, said on Monday that he would retire at the end of the current campaign, after a nearly 18-year career that was replete with trophies. Higuain is 34 years old.

Higuain began his professional career with River Plate, but he gained notoriety with Real Madrid, Napoli, and Juventus before joining Major League Soccer club Inter Miami in 2020. During his club career, Higuain has scored over 300 goals, in addition to 31 goals for Argentina.

I believe like football has given me so much, Higuain said to reporters after having the best career imaginable. It’s time to say farewell, so many thanks to everyone who has supported me throughout.

Following his River Plate debut in 2005, Higuain transferred to Real Madrid, where he scored 121 goals and won three LaLiga championships, a Copa del Rey, and two Spanish Supercups.

With Napoli, he tied the league record for goals in a season with 36 and contributed to the team’s Coppa Italia victory, but it was in Italy that he earned his name.

As a result of his success in Naples, he was offered a 90 million euro ($88.29 million) transfer to Juventus, where he went on to win three league championships and two more Italian Cups. Prior to his transfer to the MLS, Higuain had spent time on loan with AC Milan and Chelsea.

The closest he ever came to winning titles with Argentina was when they placed second at the 2014 World Cup and the Copa America in 2015 and 2016.

In their final two home games of the regular season, against Orlando City on Wednesday and Montreal on Sunday, Inter Miami announced that Higuain will captain the team, with a playoff spot still in reach.
