However, street food can still be enjoyed at home in a more relaxed setting, whether you’re conversing with friends or family. These Thai-style prawn sosaties are a great example of street food that can be enjoyed in any setting, whether it’s in the kitchen or at a braai.

THAI-STYLE PRAWN SOSATIES TIPS

This recipe is adaptable to your preferences, whether you choose to use fresh or frozen prawns. Regardless of which option you choose, it’s important to ensure that they are cleaned properly. If you’re using larger prawns, it’s perfectly fine to leave the shells on, as they will cook and soften up nicely. The sauce can also be customized to your desired level of spiciness, and you can even make two different sauces to suit different preferences.

To add some variety to your prawn sosaties, you can include citrus and acid, along with some pineapple, on the skewers. You can prepare these Thai-style prawn sosaties on a stove-top grill or on the braai, making them an excellent choice for outdoor cooking.

If you’re serving these prawn sosaties as a starter, sweet chilli sauce is an excellent option for dipping. However, these skewers are versatile and can be enjoyed as a main dish when paired with delicious sides.

In summary, if you’re looking for a snack or meal that reminds you of your travels abroad, consider trying these Thai-style prawn sosaties. With their spicy and aromatic marinade and sauce, they’re sure to satisfy your taste buds and impress your guests with their unique flavors.

Recipe by Melissa Jacobs

Course: Snack

Cuisine: Global

Difficulty: Easy

Servings: 24 servings

Prep time: 20 minutes

Cooking time: 20 minutes

Total time: 40 minutes

INGREDIENTS

  • 24 medium bamboo skewers

  • 400 g medium shrimp/prawns

  • 2 grated garlic cloves

  • 1 tbsp. grated fresh ginger

  • 1 chopped chilli

  • 1⁄2 cup honey

  • 30 ml soy sauce

  • 1⁄2 cup fresh coriander

  • 30 ml vegetable oil

  • lemon Slices

METHOD

  • To prepare this delicious prawn skewer recipe, start by soaking bamboo skewers in water for 20 minutes. This helps prevent the skewers from burning when grilled.
  • While the skewers are soaking, make the marinade by combining garlic, ginger, honey, chili, and soy sauce in a saucepan. Heat the mixture over low heat, stirring occasionally.
  • Thread about five prawns onto each skewer, making sure to leave enough space between each prawn to ensure even cooking.
  • Heat a grill pan over medium to high heat, and brush the grill with oil to prevent sticking. Place the skewers on the grill, and brush with the marinade. Grill for 2 minutes before flipping the skewers and brushing generously with more marinade. Grill for another 2 minutes or until the prawns are cooked through.
  • Once done, remove the skewers from the grill and drizzle them with the remaining glaze. Squeeze lemon juice over the skewers for a burst of freshness and garnish with coriander leaves for added flavor and presentation.
  • Enjoy these delicious prawn skewers as a tasty appetizer or as a main dish paired with your favorite sides.
