Senator Ted Cruz from Texas spoke at the Conservative Political Action Conference in National Harbor, Maryland and accused Dr. Anthony Fauci of lying to Congress about the origins of COVID-19.

Cruz suggested that Fauci should face perjury charges for knowingly and willingly telling lies to millions of Americans.

The Texas Republican was referencing the recent report by the Department of Energy stating that COVID-19 may have originated from a Chinese laboratory.

Fauci, who retired at the end of 2021 after more than five decades in government, has long dismissed the theory that COVID-19 originated from a lab.

He has consistently claimed that the virus’s most likely origin was from an animal species to a human, and it was “molecularly impossible” for the viruses being worked on at the Wuhan Institute of Virology to have mutated into the one responsible for the pandemic.

Republicans have also accused Fauci of lying about the National Institutes of Health funding for “gain-of-function” research at the Wuhan laboratory. Cruz expressed doubts that the Biden administration’s Justice Department would bring charges against Fauci, but he vowed that the Republican-led House would investigate Fauci’s alleged misleading of the American people and the corruption that drove it.

On Tuesday, FBI Director Christopher Wray confirmed the bureau’s reported stance that the COVID-19 virus came from a Chinese lab leak, backing up the DOE’s “low confidence” findings.

Despite Cruz’s accusations, whether Fauci will face charges or an investigation by the House remains to be seen.
