The attack took place near Lake Annecy in the eastern part of the country.

According to Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin, the assailant, armed with a knife, targeted a square in Annecy, injuring several individuals, including children.

Prompt police intervention led to the swift arrest of the attacker.

Mr. Darmanin confirmed that five people were wounded in the attack, with four young children requiring intensive care.

An investigation into the incident revealed that the attacker, identified as Abdalmash H, aged 32, was a Syrian asylum seeker who had spent considerable time in Annecy.

The assault took place around 9:45 a.m. in a park square, where the assailant indiscriminately targeted children and also harmed an adult.

Witnesses to the attack recounted the panic that ensued as the attacker shouted in English and began assaulting the vulnerable children.

The motive behind the attack remains unclear, but it appears that the assailant aimed to cause as much harm as possible, with the young children being easy targets.

François Astorg, the Mayor of Annecy, expressed his shock and condolences, stating that it was an appalling attack on the Paquier park in Annecy, extending his sympathies to the victims and their families.

Local lawmaker Antoine Armand also condemned the attack, describing it as abominable, particularly emphasizing that the children were attacked while on a playground.

The gravity of the incident led to a moment of silence being observed by lawmakers in Paris, who interrupted a debate to pay tribute to the victims.

The attack has left the community and the entire nation deeply disturbed and concerned about the safety of children in public spaces.
