A suspect wanted for the murder of a police officer was shot dead in Inanda as he attempted to kill other cops.
The event occurred in the morning of Tuesday, January 17, 2023.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), in KwaZulu-Natal, members of the K9 Unit, the Directorate of Priority Crime Investigation Anti-Gang Unit, and the Directorate of Priority Crime Investigation National Priority Violent Crime were pursuing the suspect who allegedly shot and killed Constable Lindokuhle Gift Goba, 40, of the Durban K9 Unit. Also, on Saturday, January 14, 2023, the man robbed the officer of his service weapon on Quarry Road in Mayville.
According to reports, police investigations led them to a hospital where the two suspects were secretly brought with gunshot wounds sustained during the gunfight with the deceased police officer.
Colonel Robert Netshiunda, a police spokesperson, said that one suspect died of his injuries at the hospital. Further investigations found that the second suspect had disappeared from the medical unit after discharging himself.
“Thorough investigation by the police identified a house in Inanda where the alleged cop killer was cornered. After the police had introduced and identified themselves as men of law, the suspect responded with a hail of bullets, and a shootout ensued. During the shootout, the suspect was fatally wounded,” Netshiunda said.
