Susan DeMarois, 57, serves on the State Independent Living Council


The following appointments were made official today by Governor Gavin Newsom:

The State Independent Living Council has appointed Susan DeMarois, 57, of Sacramento. Since 2021, DeMarois has served as the California Department of Aging’s director.

From 2019 to 2020, she served as a member of the Master Plan for Aging Stakeholder Advisory Committee.

Between 1999 and 2021, DeMarois served in a number of capacities at the Alzheimer’s Association, including those of Director of Public Policy and Advocacy, Director of California Government Affairs, and Director of California State Policy.

Between 2002 through 2009, she served as the University of California, Davis Health System’s assistant director of government and community relations.

From 1993 through 1999, DeMarois served as LeadingAge California’s associate director of public policy.

The State Independent Living Council has appointed Sacramento resident Kimberley Johnson, 44.

Since 2015, Johnson has served in a number of positions at the California Department of Social Services, including those of Deputy Director of Family Engagement and Empowerment, Branch Chief of CalWORKS and Child Care, and Branch Chief of Child Care and Refugee Programs.

Johnson has been the department’s director since 2019. From 2012 to 2015, she served as the California Child Care Resource and Referral Network’s public policy director.

From 2009 to 2012, Johnson oversaw the City College of San Francisco’s Early Childhood Mentor Program.

From 2007 to 2010, she served as the Parent Services Project’s Director of Programs and Training.

From 1999 through 2007, Johnson served as the Children’s Network of Solano County’s programme director.

Reappointed to the State Independent Living Council, where she has worked since 2019, is Susan “Tink” Miller, 75, of Foresthill.

Since 1995, Miller has served as Placer Independent Resource Services’ executive director.

Between 1979 and 1995, she served in a number of capacities at the Westside Center for Independent Living, including Controller, Director of Administration and Finance, and Acting Executive Co-Director.

There is no pay for this job, nor is Senate confirmation necessary. Miller enrolled without a preference for a party.

Reappointed to the State Independent Living Council, where she has worked since 2019, is Ning “Jenny” Yang, 34, of Ukiah.

From 2013 to 2018, Yang served as vice chair of the California State Council on Developmental Disabilities.

From 2011 to 2013, she served as a student representative on the Board of Governors of the California Community Colleges.
