Sundowns thrash Ronwen Williams’ SuperSport comeback

Friday night in Durban, Ronwen Williams’ emotional return to the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium to play against SuperSport United ended in a humiliating 2-1 loss to Matsatsantsa.

After nine minutes, Iqraam Rayners’s cross was converted by Thapelo Maseko to give the home side the lead.

SuperSport displayed defensive maturity by preventing the defending league winners from creating excellent chances and gaining attacking space. On the cusp of halftime, Matsatsantsa’s veteran striker Bradley Grobler headed in a cross from Rayners, who provided his second assist of the evening.

In second-half stoppage time, Sundowns scored a goal, but it was little more than a consolation. After spending the bulk of the game fighting to find space, Peter Shalulile found Abubeker Nassir with a deft ball, and the Ethiopian scored.

The victory will be a source of comfort for SuperSport coach Gavin Hunt. After a sluggish start to his second tenure as coach, his side has won consecutive league matches against Sundowns and Richards Bay. The outcome will serve as a wake-up call for Sundowns. It stopped them from reaching the top of the standings and was their second loss of the season. If they want to win the league again this season, they may have to work much harder than in prior years.

Sundowns are scheduled to meet Chippa United at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in the Eastern Cape on Thursday. Next Saturday, SuperSport will take on Maritzburg United at the Harry Gwala Stadium.
