Sporadic gunfire in Scunthorpe

This is the dramatic moment police opened fire on a guy ‘with a knife’ after he gravely hurt two cops while attempting to tackle him.

After responding to allegations of a man ‘carrying firearms inside a property’ in Scunthorpe at approximately 6.30pm on Wednesday night, the officers from Humberside Police were ‘brought to hospital for treatment for serious injuries.’

With a cordon and a significant police presence outside the residence in Theodore Road, the suspect was also brought to hospital and is in a stable condition.

Three gunshots can be heard in CCTV obtained by MailOnline of the event, as locals gathered outside the barrier scream in horror.

‘There is now a scene in place on Theodore Road, Scunthorpe, following a police encounter last evening,’ said Deputy Chief Constable Paul Anderson.

‘Just before 6.30 p.m., we received a contact from a member of the public who expressed worry for their safety in regard to a guy reportedly carrying firearms inside an address.’

‘Officers were dispatched swiftly, and a perimeter was established to guarantee the safety of individuals in the area.’

‘Police shot the individual during the incident.’ He was rushed to the hospital, where he is now in stable condition.

‘While responding to the event, two police officers were also hurt. Both were carried to the hospital with critical injuries.’

‘Those officers, as well as all their colleagues who attended the incident, are being supported by their line managers, the Police Federation, and our broader wellbeing team,’ Mr Anderson added.

The incident has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) by the force.

‘We can confirm we have opened an independent investigation following an incident at an address in Scunthorpe at around 9pm yesterday evening in which firearms officers were deployed,’ a spokesperson for the IOPC said.

‘We were told that a police firearm was discharged during the encounter, and that a guy was injured but not seriously.’

‘We are also aware that two police officers were injured and we wish them a speedy recovery.

‘After being informed of the incident by Humberside Police, we sent investigators to the scene to start gathering evidence and to the post-incident procedure where the officers involved provided their initial accounts.

‘Our investigation is in its very early stages.’
