Simu Liu of Shang-Chi criticizes Quentin Tarantino’s Marvel critique

Simu Liu, star of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, has responded to Quentin Tarantino’s recent comments regarding Marvel films.

This week, the director of Pulp Fiction spoke on the 2 Bears, 1 Cave podcast, where he criticized the superhero picture genre, stating that the blockbuster series “seems to be the only thing created.”

Oscar-winning actor Chris Evans (Captain America) and Chris Hemsworth (Thor) were criticized by the 59-year-old Oscar winner, who did not specify their names.

“As part of the Marvel-ization of Hollywood, you have all of these big actors portraying these characters.” However, they are not film stars. Right? Captain America is the main character. Or Thor is the main character,” he remarked.

The notorious director did not conceal his disapproval of the Marvel series.

The director of Kill Bill stated that he had “an axe to grind” with Marvel.

“They appear to be the only things manufactured,” Tarantino stated.

“And they’re the only things that appear to inspire any sort of enthusiasm among fans or even favor for the company producing them.

“This is what they are enthusiastic about. And, you know, it’s simply the fact that they symbolize the entirety of this cinematic age right now.”

Liu took to Twitter to vent his anger with the renowned filmmaker and Martin Scorsese for disparaging Marvel.

“Had Tarantino and Scorsese been the sole gatekeepers to cinematic stardom, I would have never had the opportunity to lead a $400 million-plus film,” Liu tweeted.

“I am awed by their filmmaking brilliance. They are transcending auteurs. But they have no right to look down their nose at me or anybody else.

Even though Simu Liu responded to Tarantino, he is not the first filmmaker to comment on the successful film franchise.

“No film studio has ever been or ever will be flawless. But I’m glad to work at a studio that has made persistent efforts to enhance diversity onscreen by developing heroes that empower and inspire people from all cultures throughout the world.

“I, too, adored the ‘Golden Age,’ but it was as white as hell.”

Scorsese stated in 2019 that Marvel films are “not cinema”

The Taxi Driver’s director told Empire, “As well-made as they are, with performers trying their best under the circumstances, I can only compare them to theme parks.”

It is not the film of someone attempting to express emotional and psychological feelings to another individual.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Departed director doubled back on his statements when visiting the BFI London Film Festival.

“That is excellent and nice for individuals who appreciate this sort of picture, and, by the way, now that I understand what goes into them, I admire what they accomplish,” he remarked.

“It’s not my cup of tea, plain and simple. It is generating a new type of audience that believes film to be that.”
