Several thousands of empty cough syrup bottles in areas frequented by drug users discovered in Verulam CBD

Thousands of empty cough syrup bottles were found in places frequented by drug users by members of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), who were conducting operations in the Verulam CBD and neighboring areas in an effort to catch wanted criminals terrorizing people.

The bottles were discovered in Verulam, KZN, under drains along the R102 Southbound lanes, beneath bridges on Todd Street, and near Groom Street on an abandoned railway line. Drug addicts and those wanted for robberies and stabbings in the Central Business Districts commonly frequent all three neighborhoods.

Reaction Officers found out that these bottles of cough mixtures were inexpensive over-the-counter (OTC) medications after asking questions at neighborhood pharmacies.

These cough syrups contain Dextromethorphan (DXM) which replaces codeine in over-the-counter cold and flu medication. This drug is intoxicating and dangerous and has become the target of abuse by drug users. It’s an easy and cheap…
